KONA
CLOUD FOREST BOTANICAL WALK
$104 Per Person (Minimum of 4 People)
It is a surprisingly short distance away
from busy Kailua-Kona to the rich forest area that sits on the slopes of
the sleeping volcano called Hualalai.
Ohi'a trees and ama'u ma'u ferns predominate in the forest sanctuary,
where plants, birds and the human spirit are nurtured in peaceful
isolation.
The ohi'a tree is the most common tree on the island, a pioneer species
adapted to slopes of new lava.
Your quiet walk through the native forest will bring you into the middle
of tree ferns, blossoms, and bamboo from around the world. Occasionally
you will pause to listen to birdsong. More than 47 bird species or
subspecies evolved from a single finchlike ancestor but, over the years
many have become extinct and many more are endangered. This forest has
become a refuge for them.
You will have a break after your walk to enjoy some refreshments and
take in the view. This short break will be followed by a stop at a local
coffee farm, where you will get a glimpse into the growing and roasting
of the bean that gets us going every morning.
